6 Month Apprenticeship Update – James Porter, Trainee Underwriter

Deciding whether to go to university or gain an apprenticeship is a difficult decision.  You need to weigh up the options and decide what is best for you.  For me, an apprenticeship was an equal alternative to university as it provides a strong framework to gain formal nationally recognised qualifications whilst allowing me to enter the world of work, gain valuable on-the-job experience and earn money, all at the same time.  The Clegg Gifford (CG) apprenticeship scheme lets you enjoy just that: gaining formal insurance qualifications, the opportunity to develop vital skills in the workplace, all whilst earning a competitive salary.

CG, a family owned company, offers full support to its three year apprenticeship scheme that goes beyond their funding of the scheme – CG’s business leaders are committed to the apprenticeship program as illustrated by the support and involvement of the senior colleagues, the allocation of mentors and the time allocated to work towards the formal qualifications.  CG provide specialist training providers who are there to help gain the skills and knowledge I need to succeed.  There is also flexibility in the formal learning that allows me to go at the pace that suits me.

After seven months into my apprenticeship, I have already completed my Certificate in Insurance (CII) and have moved directly onto the Diploma in Insurance (DIP).  I decided that given the high-level industry exposure, and the salary, it was a logical decision over the university debt. Moreover, the Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII) qualification is considered on par with a level 6 bachelor’s degree and may be valued higher by employers.  As an apprentice, I am a permanent employee and I hope that getting into employment earlier will give me the potential to progress my career quickly.

At CG there is training and hands on experience to be gained in underwriting, claims, finance and operations and all of this provides a solid base for my career.  So far, I have had the opportunity to work across multiple product lines and deal directly with brokers.  During this process, I am learning to become confident in team working, effective communication and problem solving.

Lastly, obviously the social element of university has a definite appeal, but I hope, once the Covid crisis has receded, that we can return to the workplace and once again enjoy meeting other employees and forming connections.  It has been great to meet the other like-minded apprentices with similar ambitions on the CG apprenticeship scheme and to share our opportunities and experiences.
